Sub-Arctic Agriculture in Tyonek

The Tyonek Tribal Conservation District works in partnership with the Native Village of Tyonek and the Tyonek Native Corporation to operate the Tyonek Farm and Garden. Initiated in 2012, this program enhances food security in our remote village by producing fresh, nutrient-rich vegetables locally.

Key Features & Facilities

  • 1.5-Acre Tyonek Farm: Outdoor growing beds for cold-hardy crops including potatoes, carrots, beets, turnips, and cabbage.
  • 4 Solar High Tunnels: Season-extending structures that trap solar heat, allowing success with tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and herbs.
  • Hydroponics Operation: Year-round indoor vertical growing system producing fresh butterhead lettuce and greens for the community during sub-zero winters.
  • Elders Food Distribution: Delivering fresh produce directly to Tyonek elders and community members throughout the growing season.
